Humanistic Judaism Study Group - KS Community Room

During our Yom Kippur service we read that "we resolve this day to see the joy of the Jewish experience." You will have this opportunity at our Humanistic Judaism Study Group where we will watch the 1936 Yiddish comedy “Yiddle With His Fiddle.”

The movie was filmed on location in Kazimierz and nearby Warsaw using local inhabitants as shtetl innkeepers, kidnapped brideson the run, and big-time Warsaw producers. In addition to being the most successful Yiddish musical of time, it was also an act of cultural solidarity, produced at a time of growing fascism and anti-Semitism.

"Seeking to help her aging father and finding few options for young women in the shtetl, Molly/Yiddle disguises herself as a boy to join a band of klezmorim. Their musical travels from shtetl to shtetl lead to Warsaw's Yiddish stage, romantic revelations and Second Avenue America.

The irrepressible Molly Picon, consummate character actor Max Bozyk and romantic lead Leon Liebgold combined talents with composer Abraham Ellstein and poet Itzik Manger to Yiddle." ...from National Center for Jewish Film
