Humanistic Judaism Study Group - Via Zoom

The focus of our country on racism and the Black Lives Matter movement has led to important conversations within the American Jewish community. Last May a controversial article was published in eJewishPhilanthropy. The authors of the article questioned the results of a survey identifying the number of Jews of Color in the US. They argued the number was closer to 6% rather than 12-15% cited in the survey. This raises a number of questions. Who is a Jew and Who is a Jew of Color? Who decides? How are Jews found to participate in surveys about American Jews? What does it mean if the number is 6% or 12-15%? What are Jews of Color saying? The original article and two responses are listed below to get us started.
